A sudden pop near the front of the elbow, followed by bruising, weakness or a change in the shape of the biceps, needs prompt medical assessment. A distal biceps tendon tear is one possible explanation. Do not wait for a PRP course to see whether normal strength returns. A complete rupture and a longstanding painful partial tear are different problems with different treatment decisions.

Ask about a planned individual assessment. This messaging route is not an emergency service.
What does the distal biceps tendon do?
It attaches the biceps to the forearm near the elbow and helps bend the elbow and turn the palm upwards. Other muscles may still bend the arm after a complete tear, so being able to lift something does not exclude an important injury. A particular loss of twisting strength can affect work, sport and daily tasks. Explain the movement you can no longer perform, not only the pain score.
Why should a suspected complete tear be assessed quickly?
AAOS says repair is ideally performed during the first two to three weeks after injury because the tendon can scar and shorten. This is not a reason to self-diagnose or a promise of surgery, but it is a reason not to spend weeks trying an unrelated treatment first. The appropriate specialist weighs function, health, goals and rehabilitation. Seek urgent care for a cold or numb hand, severe injury or other concerning symptoms.
Does everyone need an operation?
No. AAOS describes nonsurgical treatment as an option for some people who do not require full arm function or for whom surgery or rehabilitation is unsuitable. Others may choose repair to recover strength and function. The decision needs a diagnosis and a discussion of benefits, risks and recovery. A reassuring ability to bend the elbow is not enough to settle that decision.
Discuss the right appointment after urgent concerns have been addressed. Suitability, location, timing and the complete fee are confirmed individually.
How are partial tears different?
Partial distal biceps tears may develop more gradually with pain during loading or forearm rotation. Imaging and examination can help distinguish tendinopathy, bursitis and the extent of structural injury. A 2024 current-concepts review describes activity modification and physiotherapy as important options, with management guided by the particular lesion. Findings and recommendations for partial degenerative disease should not be copied to an acute complete rupture.
Is PRP an evidence-based substitute for repair?
No strong evidence establishes PRP as a substitute for reattaching a completely ruptured distal biceps tendon. For distal biceps tendinopathy, the 2024 review describes sparse PRP reports and a lack of high-quality evidence. Small series cannot establish reliable superiority or a return-to-sport promise. If an injection is considered for a selected chronic problem, ask why it is appropriate, what uncertainty remains and how it fits with rehabilitation.
What should I do before the assessment?
Avoid heavy lifting and repeated strength tests while arranging prompt review. Note when the injury happened, whether there was a pop and how bruising or weakness developed. Bring any imaging and mention anticoagulants or relevant medical conditions. Ask whether the clinician suspects a complete tear and whether a time-sensitive specialist opinion is needed. Do not let a package purchase replace that decision.
What makes a premium joint or tendon assessment worthwhile?
A careful assessment should establish which structure is causing symptoms and whether an injection has a defensible role. Ask how the diagnosis will be confirmed, what rehabilitation or other treatment belongs in the plan and what would trigger referral. Where imaging is useful, ask what question it will answer. A scan finding is not automatically the cause of pain, and a treatment sold for one diagnosis should not be transferred to another without evidence.
For published London market context, Chelsea Pharmacy Medical Clinic lists a single-joint combination of hyaluronic acid, PRP and steroid at Β£925. This is a different combined intervention, not a like-for-like standalone PRP quote or The London PRP Clinic tariff. A higher price does not establish a better outcome. The complete fee should reflect the assessment, professional expertise, any agreed imaging or procedure, and the review arrangements. Request an itemised quote before deciding and ask which elements are separate. A technically impressive injection is not good value if it delays the right diagnosis or a time-sensitive treatment. No PRP response is guaranteed. The London PRP Clinic is part of The Wellness; the team confirms the appropriate appointment and the service it can arrange for the individual concern.
What should I bring to the appointment?
Bring the injury timeline, previous scan reports, medicines and a description of the activities you need to recover. Explain whether symptoms began with a particular event, whether movement is blocked and whether strength has changed. Tell the clinician about fever, wounds, anticoagulants, previous surgery and other medical conditions. Do not stop prescribed medicines to prepare for an enquiry. An informed decision can be to use rehabilitation, seek a specialist opinion or have no injection at all.
Request a suitable assessment and a clear individual plan. If symptoms are urgent, use the urgent route described above rather than waiting for a reply.
