Hair fibres and concealers: can you use them while treating hair loss?

Information checked 24 October 2026. General information, not individual medical advice.

Can I use hair fibres or concealers while investigating hair loss?

They may be an option, but tell the clinician what you use and ask how to prepare for an examination or treatment. A cosmetic concealer changes appearance; it does not diagnose the cause or regrow hair. You do not have to choose between caring about how your hair looks now and finding out why it is changing. [1]

What concealers can and cannot do

The American Academy of Dermatology describes wigs and concealers, including sprays and powders, as options that can hide hair loss and offer an immediate cosmetic result. It makes an important distinction: they cannot slow the loss or help hair regrow. A fuller-looking photograph after using a product should not be described as evidence that a treatment has grown new hair. [1]

Diagnosis still comes first

A clinician needs the history and a close examination of the scalp and hair. The AAD explains that selected people may need blood tests or a scalp biopsy when a disease, deficiency, hormone problem or infection is suspected. Not everyone needs those tests. Equally, a concealer is not a reason to put off a new patch, sudden change, sore scalp or unexplained ongoing loss. [1]

Tell the team before the appointment

Give the product name, how you apply it and whether it irritates the scalp. Ask whether to arrive with it removed and which washing instructions apply. Do not assume that instructions for a consultation are the same as instructions for injections. If photographs will be used to assess change, ask the clinic how to keep lighting, styling and products consistent.

Where PRP fits into the discussion

The AAD includes PRP among treatment options discussed after diagnosis. It describes a blood draw, processing and scalp injections, rather than a cosmetic coating. Response is not guaranteed, and not every cause of hair loss needs the same treatment. A suitability assessment should explain the evidence for your diagnosis, the alternatives, possible risks and how a response would be judged. [1]

A practical checklist

Before enquiring, write down when the thinning began, whether it is shedding or breakage, any scalp symptoms and all medicines and supplements. Add the concealer or styling product to the list. Bring previous photographs if available, but say whether fibres, sprays, colour or a different hairstyle were used. That context helps avoid mistaking a styling change for a biological one.

Ask for a plan you can live with

Contact The London PRP Clinic by The Wellness for a hair-loss assessment and explain that you use or want to use a concealer. Ask what the consultation includes and whether PRP is appropriate before committing to a course. Confirm total fees and the review plan. There is no need to hide the cosmetic steps that help you feel comfortable while the medical question is being answered.

Common questions

Will fibres make my hair grow? They are a cosmetic cover, not a regrowth treatment. Must I stop them permanently before PRP? Ask for instructions specific to the product and proposed procedure; do not guess a universal interval. Can photographs still be useful? Yes, if the clinician knows the products and conditions involved. Is concealment a substitute for assessment? No.
