Outside central London the picture changes, with PRP advertised from around £250 to £500 per session at established musculoskeletal clinics. London practices generally charge well above the rest of the UK across private healthcare, and some of that gap is simply rent and salaries.
The rest of it is not. The most common structural difference between a £300 injection and an £850 one is whether ultrasound guidance was used, whether a doctor examined you and reviewed imaging before deciding what to inject, and whether anyone confirmed the diagnosis in the first place. Those are not refinements. In a deep joint such as the hip, or in a specific damaged portion of a tendon, they determine whether the treatment reached the target at all.
What the price should include

How many injections you actually need
This affects the total more than the per-injection price, and it should be a clinical decision rather than a package.
For chronic tendon conditions such as tennis elbow and plantar fasciitis, a course is common, and the evidence supporting PRP in these is strong. A 2025 Level I meta-analysis of 26 randomised controlled trials found PRP statistically and clinically better than corticosteroid for tennis elbow beyond six months.
For the hip, the position is different and worth knowing before you buy a package. A systematic review and meta-analysis found that in hip osteoarthritis a single injection outperformed multiple injections, and that leukocyte-poor preparations produced greater pain reduction than leukocyte-rich. More is not automatically better, and a clinic quoting three hip injections as standard is not following that evidence.
For knee osteoarthritis, be aware the evidence is genuinely contested. Pooled data favour PRP over hyaluronic acid gel, including a 2023 meta-analysis of 30 studies and 2,733 patients, while a large 2021 randomised trial in JAMA found no benefit over placebo and NICE describes the evidence as limited in quality. We would rather you knew that before spending £2,000 than after.
Will insurance or the NHS pay
Almost certainly not, and it is better to plan on that basis.
PRP is not routinely commissioned by the NHS for joint or tendon conditions. Where local commissioning policies address refractory tennis elbow, Achilles tendinopathy and plantar fasciitis, access is restricted and most people do not meet the criteria.
Private medical insurance rarely covers PRP even where it covers other treatment for the same condition, because insurers generally class it as not established for these indications.
