Microneedling Alone or With PRP | Which Treatment Fits Your Skin

Written and reviewed by the clinical team at The Wellness

Direct answer

Microneedling alone and microneedling with PRP are not automatically interchangeable. The choice depends on the skin problem, the proposed procedure and the evidence for that indication. Research suggests that adding PRP may improve some atrophic acne-scar outcomes, but it does not prove that every skin concern needs PRP or that every preparation gives the same result.

Define the concern before choosing the procedure

Ask the clinician to assess whether the issue is acne scarring, uneven texture, pigmentation or another condition. Different concerns need different plans. The word β€œrejuvenation” is not a diagnosis or an outcome measure. Agree what you want to improve and how it will be judged before comparing treatment names or buying a course.

What microneedling adds

Microneedling uses controlled skin punctures intended to stimulate a repair response and dermal remodelling. The depth, area treated and technique matter. Ask what is proposed for your skin and what downtime and aftercare to expect. Professional assessment and sterile technique matter; a treatment description is not an instruction to try the procedure yourself.

What adding PRP means

PRP is prepared from a sample of your blood. It may be applied alongside microneedling or delivered by injection, depending on the plan. These routes are not the same procedure. Ask whether PRP is applied to the skin, injected or both, and whether any other material is used. Research on one route should not be presented as proof for a different route.

Where the evidence is most useful

A meta-analysis of controlled acne-scar studies found better scar outcomes with microneedling plus PRP than with microneedling without PRP. The authors also noted important limits: many studies were non-randomised, preparations varied and safety data were limited. This supports a discussion for selected acne scars. It does not establish a guaranteed benefit for general ageing, pigmentation or every skin type.

More treatment also means more to consider

Discuss pain, redness, swelling, bruising, infection risk, aftercare and any relevant medicines or skin history. If the plan includes facial injections, the clinician should explain the risks of that route. Using your own blood does not make a procedure risk-free. Limited studies with few serious events cannot establish that an uncommon complication never occurs.

Compare prices for the actual plan

Microneedling is Β£355 and PRP facial treatment is Β£450 on the clinic’s rate card. Do not assume the PRP facial price is an all-inclusive price for every combined protocol. Ask exactly what the quoted procedure includes, how many sessions are proposed, whether consultation is separate and the total cost. A higher price is not evidence of a better result.

Questions that settle the choice

Ask which diagnosis is being treated; why microneedling alone is or is not enough; what evidence supports adding PRP for that diagnosis; the delivery route; likely benefit and uncertainty; risks and aftercare; and how progress will be reviewed. If the benefit of an extra procedure is unclear, ask whether a simpler plan or waiting is reasonable.

Frequently asked questions

Is adding PRP always better?

No. Evidence depends on the condition and procedure. Findings for acne scars cannot be assumed to apply to every skin concern.

Is PRP applied with microneedling the same as facial PRP injections?

No. Application through microneedling and injection are different delivery routes with different procedural considerations.

Does the PRP facial price cover every combined treatment?

Do not assume so. Confirm the exact procedure, included services and total price before booking.
