Onion juice for hair growth: does it work, and what does the research show?

Onion juice has one small trial behind it, and that trial studied patchy alopecia areata, not common pattern hair loss. In 2002, 87% of people applying crude onion juice twice daily regrew hair by six weeks, against 13% using tap water. As of October 2026 no larger trial has confirmed it, and nothing shows it helps male or female pattern hair loss.

Does onion juice work for hair growth?

For alopecia areata, possibly. The study is Sharquie and Al-Obaidi, published in the Journal of Dermatology in 2002. It included 23 people applying crude onion juice and 15 applying tap water, twice daily for two months. Hair regrowth was seen in 17 of the 23 (73.9%) at four weeks and 20 of the 23 (86.9%) at six weeks, against 2 of 15 (13%) in the control group at eight weeks (P < 0.0001). It is a small, single-centre trial from 2002, and alopecia areata can regrow without any treatment.

Key points

  • The only controlled trial of onion juice studied alopecia areata, an autoimmune patchy hair loss (Journal of Dermatology, 2002, 38 participants).
  • Alopecia areata often regrows by itself, so a small trial without replication cannot prove cause and effect.
  • No trial shows onion juice helps pattern hair loss, the most common type.
  • Onion juice can sting, cause contact dermatitis and leave a lasting smell.
  • PRP is supported by a 2025 meta-analysis in Dermatology and Therapy of 43 randomised controlled trials and 1,877 participants, with pooled hair density rising from roughly 142 to 178 hairs per square centimetre.
  • 87% of hair restoration patients showed visible improvement at their week-16 photo review (internal case study, March 2026).

Why did onion juice get so popular?

The social media claims are about sulphur and growth. That sounds plausible, but the 2002 study did not test those mechanisms, and no larger trial has repeated its result. The result got attention because the regrowth rate looked high. The group size is the problem: with 38 people, a few differences in age or disease severity can swing the result.

Is onion juice safe on the scalp?

It can irritate. Raw onion juice may cause stinging, redness, itching or contact dermatitis, and the smell can last through washing. Patch test on the inner forearm first, and stop if a rash appears. It should not go near broken skin or the eyes.

What should you do about patchy hair loss?

Patchy loss deserves a diagnosis. Alopecia areata, tinea capitis (a scalp fungal infection), traction alopecia and scarring conditions look similar to the eye and are treated very differently. Dermoscopy, which magnifies the scalp, separates them in minutes. A home remedy can delay the right treatment while follicles are still recoverable.

Where does PRP fit?

For pattern hair loss, PRP is supported by a 2025 meta-analysis in Dermatology and Therapy of 43 randomised controlled trials and 1,877 participants, with pooled hair density rising from roughly 142 to 178 hairs per square centimetre. Onion juice has nothing comparable.

87% of hair restoration patients showed visible improvement at their week-16 photo review (internal case study, March 2026).

What treatment costs in London

Doctor-led regenerative hair treatment in central London sits at the top of the UK market, with flagship Harley Street and Mayfair clinics commonly charging Β£600 to Β£850 or more per PRP session. At The London PRP Clinic by The Wellness, PRP hair restoration is Β£450 per session and Β£1,215 for a course of three, performed by doctors, with a hair loss consultation including dermoscopic imaging at Β£150. This is not a secret, and it is the same price whether you ask by email, phone or WhatsApp.

When you compare prices, remember what the figure buys: a diagnosis, an evidence base, a standardised protocol and a measured outcome, not just an injection.

Why blood tests and scalp imaging come first

Low ferritin, thyroid dysfunction, low vitamin D and B12, and hormonal change can all cause hair loss that no topical will fix. Our doctors arrange blood tests and examine the scalp with dermoscopy before recommending anything, so the plan fits the follicles you actually have.

Why people choose The London PRP Clinic by The Wellness

The London PRP Clinic by The Wellness is a doctor-led, blood-test-first clinic and one of London's leading choices for hair restoration, based at Unit 4, 10 Portman Square, London W1H 6AZ. Diagnosis, blood testing and the full regenerative range sit under one roof, so our recommendation follows your scalp rather than a single product line.

Frequently asked questions about onion juice and hair growth

Does onion juice regrow hair? One 2002 trial of 38 people found it helped regrowth in patchy alopecia areata (Journal of Dermatology). There is no trial evidence for pattern hair loss.

How long does onion juice take to work? In the trial, regrowth began within two to four weeks and was assessed over two months. Alopecia areata can also regrow on its own.

Is onion juice better than minoxidil? It has never been compared. Minoxidil 5% is licensed in the UK for male pattern hair loss and has far more trial data.

Does onion juice cause side effects? Stinging, redness, itching and contact dermatitis are possible, and the smell lingers. Patch test first.

Can onion juice help female hair thinning? There is no good evidence for that. Female thinning needs blood tests and a proper diagnosis first.
