Does scalp massage help hair growth? What the evidence shows

Reviewed by The Wellness Team. Last reviewed October 2026.

Short answer: scalp massage has one small study behind it, not a proven treatment. In a 2016 study of nine healthy men, four minutes of standardised massage a day for 24 weeks was followed by a small rise in hair thickness (0.085 mm to 0.092 mm). It is safe and cheap, so it is fine as an extra. It will not replace treatment for pattern hair loss.

What the study actually showed

Researchers in Tokyo gave nine men a daily four-minute scalp massage with a device for 24 weeks. They measured hair number, thickness and growth rate. Hair thickness rose from 0.085 mm to 0.092 mm. In the lab, stretching human hair follicle cells changed the activity of thousands of genes, including some linked to the hair cycle.

Be clear about the limits:

  • Only nine people took part, and all were men.
  • There was no comparison group that did not receive massage.
  • The change was a fraction of a hundredth of a millimetre.
  • The authors link the result to stretching forces on the follicle cells, which is a proposed explanation, not a proven one.

How to try it

If you want to try it anyway:

  • Use the pads of your fingers, not your nails.
  • Press firmly enough to move the scalp over the bone, not to rub over the skin.
  • Do about four minutes a day, as in the study, and keep it up for several months before judging it.
  • Stop if your scalp is sore, red or flaky, and have it checked.

What it will not do

Pattern hair loss runs on hormones and genes. The NHS lists finasteride and minoxidil as the main proven treatments for male pattern baldness, and minoxidil for female pattern baldness, and says that no treatment works for everyone. Massage does not replace these.

If the hair is coming out in handfuls, a different cause such as illness, stress, low iron or thyroid problems may be at work, and a blood test comes first. See our guide on hair loss blood tests.

Where PRP fits

Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) is made from a small sample of your own blood and injected into the scalp. The research on PRP for pattern hair loss is mixed. Trials are small and methods differ. It can sit alongside other treatments once the cause is clear. We do not guarantee regrowth.

Our prices are plain: PRP for hair is Β£450 per session, or Β£1,215 for a course of three.

Next step

If your hair is thinning and you want a clear view on the cause, we can take a magnified look at your scalp and talk through your history.
