How Many PRP Sessions for Hair Loss? The Treatment Schedule and a Realistic Results Timeline
Most people start PRP for hair loss with a course of 3 sessions, one a month, then a review at around 3 months after the last session. That is the schedule used in most of the clinical trials. Shedding often slows first, and any gain in density is usually judged at 3 to 6 months, because hair grows slowly. After the first course, many people have a single top-up session every 4 to 6 months to hold the result. At The London PRP Clinic by The Wellness, a GMC-registered doctor checks the cause of your hair loss first, then sets the plan: £450 per session or £1,215 for a course of 3.
Key points
In a 2022 meta-analysis of 15 clinical trials, most treatment groups had 3 sessions spaced one month apart. (Journal of Personalized Medicine, 2022)
Across those trials, average hair density rose from about 142 to 178 hairs per square centimetre by the final assessment.
More sessions did not clearly mean better results in that analysis, so a larger course is not automatically better value.
PRP works best for pattern hair loss that is caught early, while follicles are still active, and alongside treatment of any medical cause.

How many PRP sessions do I need for hair loss?
For pattern hair loss, a first course of 3 sessions is the usual starting point. Some trials used 2 and some used 4, but 3 monthly sessions is the most common schedule and the one with the most evidence behind it. The number that suits you depends on how much hair you have lost, how long it has been going on and how your scalp responds, which is why a doctor should set the plan after assessing you rather than selling a fixed package.
How far apart should PRP sessions be?
About 4 weeks apart. That spacing matches the monthly schedules in the trials and gives the scalp time to respond between treatments. Once the first course is complete, maintenance sessions are usually spaced 4 to 6 months apart, depending on how well the result holds.
When will I see results from PRP?
Hair grows roughly a centimetre a month and each follicle moves through a long growth cycle, so change is gradual.
After the first session, nothing visible is expected. Some people notice less hair in the brush within the first 2 months.
Around 3 months, shedding has often settled and early fine regrowth may appear along the parting or hairline.
At 3 to 6 months after starting, density and thickness can be judged properly, ideally against standardised photographs taken at your first visit.
At around 6 months, the doctor reviews the result and decides on maintenance.
Does PRP work for everyone?
No. PRP is most useful for androgenetic alopecia, the common pattern hair loss in men and women, and for some other types when the cause is understood. It works less well where follicles have been inactive for years, and it will not fix shedding driven by low iron, thyroid problems or a recent illness until that cause is treated. In some trials the placebo side also improved, which is a reason for honest expectations and careful before-and-after photographs.
Can I combine PRP with minoxidil or finasteride?
Often, yes. In trials that combined PRP with minoxidil, the combined groups tended to do better than PRP alone. Your doctor will talk through whether a medical treatment alongside PRP makes sense for you, and whether it is safe with your health and plans. Read our guides to oral minoxidil and finasteride side effects.
What happens at each session?
A small amount of your blood is taken, as for a routine blood test. It is spun in a centrifuge to concentrate the platelets, then the plasma is injected into the thinning areas of the scalp through very fine needles. A session takes around an hour. Most people go back to work the same day, with some tenderness for a day or two. You can wash your hair the next day.
