Mounjaro, Wegovy And Hair Loss In Men. What The New Studies Show

2 studies published in 2026 strengthen the link between weight-loss injections and hair loss. A large US records study found new hair loss was more common in people starting semaglutide, the medicine in Wegovy and Ozempic, or tirzepatide, the medicine in Mounjaro, than in people starting metformin. A separate genetic study from NYU Langone suggests the GLP-1 pathway itself may raise the risk of male pattern hair loss. Neither study proves the injections cause permanent baldness, and most shedding linked to rapid weight loss recovers. Men who are already losing hair, though, have good reason to act early.

What the 2026 studies found

The health records study

Lanehart and colleagues used the TriNetX database of US health records to compare adults newly prescribed a GLP-1 medicine with adults newly prescribed metformin, matched for age, health and other factors. Over 1 year, new non-scarring hair loss was recorded about 1.43 times as often with semaglutide and about 1.68 times as often with tirzepatide. The older GLP-1 medicines dulaglutide and liraglutide showed no significant difference. The pattern held in both men and women.

What it means. People starting the newer, more powerful weight-loss medicines were more likely to be diagnosed with hair loss in the following year. Because these medicines cause much faster weight loss than metformin, the study cannot separate the effect of the medicine from the effect of rapid weight loss itself.

The genetic study

Researchers at NYU Langone Health used a method called Mendelian randomisation, which uses natural genetic variation as a stand-in for a medicine’s effect. They found that genetically higher GLP-1 receptor activity was linked to a small extra risk of male pattern hair loss, reported as around 7 percent, and the link held after accounting for blood pressure, insulin resistance and lower testosterone. The senior investigator described it as the first genetic link between GLP-1 activity and male pattern hair loss.

What it means. It raises the possibility that, in men already prone to male pattern hair loss, the medicines might nudge that process along, separately from weight loss. It does not measure hair loss in men actually taking the injections, it used mostly White populations, and the mechanism is unknown. It is a signal to research further, not a reason to stop a medicine that is helping your health.

The 2 kinds of hair loss on weight-loss injections

Shedding from rapid weight loss

The most common pattern is telogen effluvium. A few months after a large, quick drop in weight, more hairs than usual move into the resting phase and shed together, often in handfuls. Lower intake of protein, iron and other nutrients during appetite suppression adds to it. It usually settles within 6 to 12 months once weight stabilises and nutrition is restored. Male pattern hair loss that speeds up or shows itself

Gradual thinning at the temples or crown that does not recover is male pattern hair loss. Shedding can make it more visible, and the new genetic study suggests the medicines might contribute in some men. This kind of loss does not recover on its own, and it responds best to treatment started early.

Eat enough protein

Get the type of hair loss diagnosed

Trichoscopy, a magnified view of the follicles, shows whether hair is simply shedding or whether follicles are shrinking from male pattern hair loss. The treatment is different for each.

Treat male pattern hair loss early

If pattern loss is present, PRP, minoxidil and other options work best while follicles are still producing hair.
