Postpartum Hair Loss London. When It Is Normal And When To Get Checked
Hair shedding after having a baby is very common and usually temporary. It tends to start 2 to 3 months after birth, peaks at around 4 months and settles by the time your baby is 1 year old. Shedding that lasts beyond a year, comes with tiredness or palpitations, or leaves a visibly wider parting deserves a check, because low iron, a thyroid problem or underlying pattern hair loss may be involved, and each is treatable.
Key points
Postpartum shedding is a form of telogen effluvium. Hair that stayed in its growth phase during pregnancy moves into the resting phase together after birth and then falls out.
Shedding usually peaks at about 4 months after birth, and most women regain their normal hair thickness by 1 year.
Postpartum thyroiditis affects an estimated 5 to 10 percent of women in the year after birth, according to Cleveland Clinic, and hair loss can be one of its signs.
At The London PRP Clinic by The Wellness, a hair consultation with full scalp examination and trichoscopy is from £300, and a targeted blood panel through The Online GP by The Wellness is from £295.

Why hair falls out after having a baby
Each hair follicle cycles through a growth phase, a short transition and a resting phase, after which the hair is shed and a new one starts to grow. During pregnancy, higher oestrogen levels keep more hairs in the growth phase than usual, which is why many women notice thicker hair. After birth, oestrogen falls quickly. A large number of hairs then move into the resting phase at the same time and are shed together a few months later.
That is why the shedding can feel sudden and dramatic, with hair coming out in the shower, on the pillow and in the brush. It is a delayed response to the end of pregnancy, not a sign that follicles are being damaged. Our guide to how much hair loss is normal explains what daily shedding looks like.
The usual timeline
2 to 3 months after birth
Shedding begins, often most noticeable at the front and temples.
Around 4 months
Shedding usually peaks.
6 to 12 months
Shedding slows, and short new hairs appear along the hairline. They can stand up and look like a fringe for a while, which is a good sign of regrowth.
By 12 months
Most women have regained their normal thickness.
The same process can follow other major physical events, such as illness, surgery or stopping the pill, which we cover in hair loss after illness or surgery and hair loss after stopping the pill.

When to get checked
Signs that something else may be involved
Shedding that continues beyond 12 months after birth. A parting that is visibly wider than before pregnancy, or thinning across the top of the head, which can mean pregnancy has revealed female pattern hair loss that was developing in the background. Round bald patches, which suggest alopecia areata. Tiredness that feels out of proportion, breathlessness, palpitations, feeling hot or cold, or unexpected weight change.
If you are feeling low, anxious or not yourself, please speak to your GP or health visitor as well. That matters more than your hair, and help is available.
The causes we look for
Iron deficiency is common after childbirth, particularly after heavy blood loss, and low iron can slow hair recovery.
Postpartum thyroiditis is inflammation of the thyroid in the year after birth. According to Cleveland Clinic, it affects an estimated 5 to 10 percent of women. An overactive phase usually happens 1 to 6 months after birth and can cause hair loss, and an underactive phase can follow at 4 to 8 months.
Vitamin D and B12 deficiency, both common and easy to correct.
Female pattern hair loss, which may become noticeable for the first time after pregnancy. Our guide is women's hair thinning on top.
What we check
You are assessed with a full scalp examination and trichoscopy, a magnified view of the follicles that shows whether hair is simply shedding or whether follicles are shrinking. We take standardised photographs so recovery can be measured.
A blood panel arranged by The Online GP by The Wellness and processed by an accredited partner laboratory checks ferritin and full iron studies, full thyroid function with antibodies, vitamin D, B12, folate, zinc and a full blood count. We read ferritin against what hair needs, not only the laboratory reference range. The reasoning behind each marker is in the hair loss blood panel.
What helps
If it is postpartum shedding alone
Reassurance, time and gentle hair care. Correcting any deficiency helps recovery. Avoid tight hairstyles while hair is fragile, and keep eating well, which is hard with a newborn but matters for regrowth.
If you are breastfeeding
Many hair loss medicines are not suitable while breastfeeding, including minoxidil and anti-androgen tablets, and some supplements contain high doses that are not appropriate either. We take this into account in every plan and discuss the timing of any treatment with you.
If hair has not recovered after 12 months
Once shedding has settled, and especially if female pattern hair loss has been revealed, PRP is an option with randomised trial evidence in women. A 2024 meta-analysis found it improved hair thickness and density and reduced shedding compared with control treatment. It uses your own blood and is often combined with minoxidil once you are no longer breastfeeding. Our full guide is PRP for women's hair loss.

Why women choose The London PRP Clinic by The Wellness
Every treatment is performed by a GMC-registered doctor. Diagnosis comes first, with trichoscopy and a full blood panel, so iron, thyroid and hormonal causes are found rather than missed. Most women who see us after a baby need reassurance and a corrected deficiency rather than treatment, and we say so. When treatment is right, it is planned around breastfeeding and your recovery.
We see patients at 10 Portman Square in Marylebone and the Light Centre in Belgravia. Across our work we report more than 187 five-star reviews. If you are unsure what type of hair loss you have, start with what type of hair loss do I have.

Frequently asked questions about postpartum hair loss
When does postpartum hair loss start and stop?
It usually starts 2 to 3 months after birth, peaks at around 4 months, and most women regain their normal thickness by 12 months.
Is postpartum hair loss permanent?
Usually not. It is a temporary shedding phase. If hair has not recovered by 12 months, or the parting looks wider than before pregnancy, it is worth checking for low iron, thyroid problems or female pattern hair loss.
Can a thyroid problem cause hair loss after pregnancy?
Yes. Postpartum thyroiditis affects an estimated 5 to 10 percent of women in the year after birth, and hair loss can be a sign of its overactive phase.
What blood tests should I have for postpartum hair loss?
Ferritin and full iron studies, full thyroid function with antibodies, vitamin D, B12, folate, zinc and a full blood count.
Can I have hair loss treatment while breastfeeding?
Many hair loss medicines, including minoxidil and anti-androgen tablets, are not suitable while breastfeeding. The timing of any treatment is best discussed with your doctor.
Does PRP help postpartum hair loss?
Postpartum shedding usually recovers without treatment. PRP is useful if hair has not recovered after shedding settles, particularly when female pattern hair loss has been revealed.
