Best Hair Loss Treatment For Women London. What Works For Each Cause

The best hair loss treatment for a woman is the one that matches the cause, and many women have more than 1 cause at the same time. Female pattern hair loss responds best to minoxidil and PRP, often together. Shedding from low iron or a thyroid problem recovers once the deficiency or hormone level is corrected. Hormonal hair loss from polycystic ovary syndrome or the menopause may need hormonal treatment as well. That is why a blood panel and a scalp examination should come before any treatment.

Key points

  • Women's hair loss most often comes from female pattern hair loss, telogen effluvium, iron deficiency, thyroid disease, hormonal change, or a combination.

  • Topical minoxidil is licensed for female pattern hair loss in the UK. A 2024 meta-analysis of randomised trials found PRP improved hair thickness and density and reduced shedding in women.

  • NICE uses a ferritin below 30 micrograms per litre to confirm iron deficiency, yet many laboratories report results from 15 as normal for women.

  • At The London PRP Clinic by The Wellness, a hair consultation with full scalp examination and trichoscopy is from Β£300, included at the first session of a course, and PRP is from Β£450 per session or Β£1,200 for a course of 3.

Start with the cause

Female pattern hair loss

Gradual thinning across the top of the head, with a widening parting and a hairline that usually stays in place. Follicles slowly shrink under genetic and hormonal influence. It is the most common cause of thinning in women and is very treatable when caught early. Our guide is women's hair thinning on top.

Telogen effluvium

Sudden, diffuse shedding 2 to 3 months after a trigger such as illness, surgery, childbirth, crash dieting or severe stress. It usually recovers once the trigger has passed.

Low iron

One of the most common treatable causes of shedding in women, often missed because a result is reported as normal. See low ferritin and hair loss.

Thyroid disease

Both an underactive and an overactive thyroid can cause diffuse thinning. Hair usually regrows once levels are corrected, but slowly. See thyroid hair loss.

Hormonal causes

Polycystic ovary syndrome, stopping the pill, pregnancy and the menopause can each trigger or reveal thinning. Our guides are PCOS hair loss, hair loss after stopping the pill, postpartum hair loss and menopause hair loss.

Patches and scarring

Round bald patches suggest alopecia areata, covered in alopecia areata treatment. Redness, scale, itching or shiny areas along the hairline can signal a scarring alopecia, which needs a dermatologist quickly.

The treatments that work, and for whom

Minoxidil

Topical minoxidil is licensed in the UK for female pattern hair loss and remains first line. It prolongs the growth phase of the hair cycle. An early increase in shedding is common and usually temporary. Low-dose oral minoxidil is prescribed off-label by doctors experienced in hair loss, after assessment. Minoxidil is not suitable in pregnancy or while breastfeeding.

PRP

PRP uses growth factors from your own blood to support follicles. The 2024 meta-analysis by Yuan and colleagues in Skin Research and Technology found it improved hair thickness and density and reduced shedding on hair pull testing in women, compared with control treatment, although the effect on hair count was mixed. It suits women with pattern thinning, women who cannot tolerate minoxidil, and women whose hair has not fully recovered after shedding has settled. Our full guide is PRP for women's hair loss.

Correcting deficiencies

Replacing iron, vitamin D or B12 where they are low is often the single most effective step for shedding, and it helps every other treatment work better.

Hormonal treatment

Spironolactone, an anti-androgen, is sometimes prescribed off-label for female pattern hair loss and polycystic ovary syndrome by doctors experienced in its use, with contraception where needed. Hormone replacement therapy may help hair around the menopause as part of a wider decision with your GP or menopause specialist. Finasteride is not licensed for women and must not be used in pregnancy.

Combining treatments

Most women do best with a plan that addresses each cause together, for example correcting iron while starting minoxidil and a course of PRP. Treating one cause and missing another is one of the most common reasons treatment seems not to work.

How we build a plan

You are assessed with a full scalp examination and trichoscopy, a magnified view of the follicles that shows whether hair is shedding, shrinking or both, with standardised photographs so progress can be measured.

A blood panel arranged by The Online GP by The Wellness and processed by an accredited partner laboratory checks ferritin and full iron studies, full thyroid function with antibodies, vitamin D, B12, folate, zinc, full blood count, HbA1c and hormonal markers where your history suggests them. The reasoning behind each marker is in the hair loss blood panel.

You then receive a written plan that covers every cause found, with what to expect at 3, 6 and 12 months. We work alongside your GP or specialist where hormonal or thyroid treatment is involved. For men, the equivalent guide is the best hair loss treatment for men.

Why women choose The London PRP Clinic by The Wellness

Every treatment is performed by a GMC-registered doctor, and no clinician treats a patient here until they have completed 100 supervised treatments. Every plan starts with trichoscopy and a full blood panel, so iron, thyroid and hormonal causes are found together rather than one at a time. We tell you plainly when your hair needs time or a corrected deficiency rather than treatment, and we refer to a consultant dermatologist when a scarring alopecia needs specialist care.

We see patients at 10 Portman Square in Marylebone and the Light Centre in Belgravia. Across our work we report an 87 percent patient success rate, a 32 percent average density increase at 6 months in hair restoration and more than 187 five-star reviews.
