Ozempic Face Treatment London. What Causes It And What Helps

"Ozempic face" is the hollow, tired or older look some people develop after losing weight quickly on Mounjaro, Wegovy or Ozempic. A 2025 systematic review found it is caused by rapid weight loss, not the drug itself. Facial fat is lost faster than the skin can adapt. It can be treated, but the right treatment depends on whether you have lost volume, skin quality or both.

Key points

  • Around 1.6 million UK adults used weight-loss medication in the past year, according to research from University College London published in January 2026.

  • A 2025 systematic review in Aesthetic Surgery Journal Open Forum found the changes come from rapid loss of facial fat without matching collagen remodelling.

  • The areas most affected are the temples, cheeks, tear troughs, jawline and the lines around the mouth.

  • Volume loss needs volume or collagen stimulation. Skin quality responds to treatments such as PRP. Most people need a combination, in the right order.

What causes it

The weight loss, not the medication

The 2025 systematic review in Aesthetic Surgery Journal Open Forum examined 23 articles on the subject, almost all published between 2023 and 2025. The authors concluded that the aged appearance is most likely a direct consequence of rapid weight loss. Fat is lost from the face faster than collagen can remodel and the skin can contract.

The same changes happen after rapid weight loss from any cause, including bariatric surgery. GLP-1 medications are simply the most common way people now lose a large amount of weight quickly.

Why the face shows it first

Facial fat sits in separate compartments that support the skin and give the face its contours. When those compartments shrink quickly, the skin above them has less support, and shadows appear where there used to be fullness.

Where it shows

The review identified fat loss in the temples, cheeks, tear troughs, jawline, marionette lines and the folds from nose to mouth. Together these make the face look gaunt and older than the person's age. Thinner, looser skin often accompanies the volume loss, particularly in people over 40, whose collagen turnover is already slower.

Three things that change, and what each needs

This is the most useful part of the page. Most disappointing results come from treating the wrong one.

Volume

Fat loss creates hollows in the temples, cheeks and under the eyes. Tilt your face towards a light. Shadows that fade when the angle changes are volume shadows. They need volume replacement with filler, or collagen stimulation with a product such as poly-L-lactic acid, known by the brand name Sculptra, which rebuilds support gradually over months.

Skin quality

The skin itself often becomes thinner, drier and less elastic after rapid weight loss. This responds to treatments that improve the tissue, including PRP, polynucleotides and microneedling. They do not add volume. For acne scarring and texture, a 2026 meta-analysis of 17 studies and 1,111 participants found adding PRP to microneedling made an excellent result about 3 times more likely. Structure

Where skin has become significantly loose, particularly along the jaw and neck, injectables cannot tighten it. Surgical options such as a face and neck lift are the honest answer for marked laxity. Adding more and more filler to compensate for loose skin is how faces end up looking heavy and altered.

Our framework for telling these apart is in which facial treatment you actually need.

Timing matters

Treat when your weight is stable

Treating volume while you are still losing weight means chasing a moving target, because the face keeps changing. For volume and structure, most doctors advise waiting until weight has been stable for a few months. Skin-quality treatments can often start sooner, since they support the tissue rather than filling it.

Sequence skin before volume

Improving skin quality first often means less volume is needed later, and what is used looks more natural. Adding filler to thin, poor-quality skin is more likely to look heavy.

What you can do yourself

Free, and it makes a difference.

Lose weight at a pace your prescriber is comfortable with rather than as fast as possible, because the speed of loss drives the facial change.

Eat enough protein and do resistance training. Muscle loss during rapid weight loss adds to the drawn look, and strength training protects it.

Use a high-factor sunscreen every day and a retinoid if your skin tolerates it. Both protect the collagen you have.

Stay hydrated and do not smoke.

If your hair is also thinning, that is common on GLP-1 medication and usually temporary. We explain it in GLP-1 hair loss.

What treatment costs in London

London clinics typically charge £450 to £800 per vial of poly-L-lactic acid, and a course of 2 to 3 sessions commonly costs £1,500 to £2,500, with more at flagship practices. Filler at leading London clinics runs around £450 to £800 per session. Doctor-led PRP and polynucleotide treatment for skin quality generally runs £400 to £850 per session or course, and a combined plan across volume and skin quality commonly reaches several thousand pounds.

Our care is doctor-led and priced below flagship central London rates, with your plan and the figure confirmed after your free suitability review.

The suitability review

Every enquiry begins with a free doctor-led suitability review rather than a booking. A GMC-registered doctor assesses your face for volume, skin quality and structure, asks about your medication and how stable your weight is, and gives one of two answers.

Approved for treatment, with what is being treated, in what order, and the cost. Or not approved, with an honest explanation of what would serve you better. That might be waiting until your weight stabilises, or a surgical opinion where laxity is the main problem.

We decline a meaningful share of facial enquiries. After weight loss, treating the wrong component is the quickest way to an unnatural result.

Frequently asked questions about Ozempic face

What is Ozempic face?

The hollow, tired or older look some people develop after rapid weight loss on GLP-1 medication such as Mounjaro, Wegovy or Ozempic, caused by fast loss of facial fat.

Does Ozempic cause it, or the weight loss?

A 2025 systematic review found it is most likely caused by rapid weight loss, with fat lost faster than collagen can remodel. The same changes follow rapid weight loss from any cause.

Which parts of the face are affected?

Most often the temples, cheeks, tear troughs, jawline, marionette lines and the folds from nose to mouth.

What is the best treatment for Ozempic face?

It depends on the cause. Volume loss needs filler or collagen stimulation such as Sculptra, skin quality responds to PRP, polynucleotides and microneedling, and marked loose skin needs a surgical opinion.

When should I start treatment?

For volume, usually once your weight has been stable for a few months. Skin-quality treatment can often start sooner.

Will PRP fix Ozempic face?

PRP improves skin quality and texture but adds no volume, so it cannot fill hollows on its own. It often works best alongside volume or collagen stimulation.
