PRP For Athletes London. Is It Allowed And Which Injuries It Helps
PRP is not prohibited under the World Anti-Doping Agency rules, so athletes in tested sports can have it, with limits. The best evidence in sport is for chronic tendon problems such as tennis elbow, jumperβs knee and rotator cuff tendinopathy, where trials show more durable improvement than steroid. For acute muscle tears the evidence is mixed, and a placebo-controlled trial found no benefit for a ruptured Achilles tendon. A good sports doctor uses PRP where it helps and says plainly where it does not.
Key points
The US Anti-Doping Agency states that PRP is not prohibited under WADA rules, but individual growth factors given separately remain banned, and PRP altered to enhance performance is not allowed.
A 2025 meta-analysis of 26 randomised trials found PRP clearly better than steroid for tennis elbow beyond 6 months.
For acute muscle injuries, a 2014 placebo-controlled trial of 80 athletes found no faster return to play, while a 2026 meta-analysis of 9 trials found return about 7.5 days sooner, with low-quality evidence.
At The London PRP Clinic by The Wellness, ultrasound-guided joint and tendon PRP is from Β£595 to Β£995 per treatment, and the diagnostic package is from Β£695.

Is PRP allowed in sport?
What the rules say
PRP was removed from the World Anti-Doping Agencyβs prohibited list in 2011 and is not prohibited today. The US Anti-Doping Agency explains the limits clearly. Individual growth factors given separately as purified substances remain prohibited. PRP that has been altered in a way that could enhance performance is not allowed. Treatment should aim to restore pre-injury function, and having PRP cannot be used to explain a positive test.
What athletes in tested sports should do
Check with your national anti-doping organisation, such as UK Anti-Doping, before treatment, and keep a record of what you received, when and why. Make sure the PRP is prepared only from your own blood, with nothing added. Tell your team doctor, and confirm your governing body has no additional rules.
Where PRP helps in sport
Tennis elbow and golferβs elbow
Tennis elbow has the strongest evidence of any sports tendon problem. A 2025 meta-analysis of 26 randomised trials found steroid better for short-term pain but PRP clearly better beyond 6 months. See PRP for tennis elbow and golferβs elbow.
Jumperβs knee
Patellar tendinopathy, common in jumping and court sports, is among the better-supported PRP uses when a proper loading programme has not worked. See PRP for Achilles and patellar tendinopathy.
Rotator cuff tendinopathy
Common in swimmers, throwers and racquet players. In a 2024 double-blinded trial of 100 patients with an average age of 27.7, 1 PRP injection outperformed steroid at 12 months, with treatment failure of 12 percent against 30 percent. See shoulder injections London.
Plantar fasciitis
Common in runners. Pooled trials show better long-term function with PRP than steroid, without the risk of thinning the heel fat pad. See PRP for plantar fasciitis.
Meniscus tears
A 2025 meta-analysis of 18 randomised trials and 1,143 patients found PRP reduced pain and cut treatment failure when used with meniscal repair surgery. See PRP for meniscus tear.

Where the evidence is mixed or negative
Acute hamstring and muscle tears. Mixed
In a 2014 trial in the New England Journal of Medicine, 80 athletes with acute hamstring injuries received PRP or a placebo injection alongside the same rehabilitation, and return to play was no faster with PRP. A 2026 meta-analysis in Sports Medicine Open pooled 9 randomised trials with 474 patients and found PRP shortened return to sport by about 7.5 days, with no difference in re-injury, but rated most of the evidence as low quality. Structured, progressive rehabilitation remains the foundation, and PRP is a judgement call for athletes facing an important deadline.
Achilles tendon rupture. Not supported
In the PATH-2 trial, published in JAMA in 2019, 230 adults with a ruptured Achilles tendon received PRP or a placebo injection. PRP did not improve function at 24 weeks.
Ankle osteoarthritis. Not supported
A 2021 randomised trial of 100 patients in JAMA found PRP no better than saline placebo.
A clinic that offers PRP for every injury is not following the evidence. The full picture across conditions is in PRP success rates.
What makes the difference for athletes
Speed of diagnosis
An accurate diagnosis on day 1 saves weeks. Ultrasound in the assessment shows the tendon, the tear and the response to loading, and MRI is arranged at the London centre best equipped for that question when it will change the plan.
Rehabilitation, not just an injection
PRP works alongside progressive loading. Return to play is guided by function and testing, not by the calendar or the injection date.
Knowing when to refer
A full-thickness tendon tear, a ligament rupture or a locked knee may need a surgeon. We refer directly, with imaging and notes sent ahead so you do not repeat them. Our wider approach is set out in private sports medicine doctor London, and runners can read running injury clinic London.
What it costs
At The London PRP Clinic by The Wellness, there are 3 ways to begin.
The diagnostic package, from Β£695, covers assessment, imaging and blood tests, and gives you a written diagnosis and plan whatever you decide.
Ultrasound-guided joint and tendon PRP is from Β£595 to Β£995 per treatment.
A course of 1 to 3 treatments with rehabilitation is what most tendon plans involve, with the exact figure confirmed in writing before you commit.

Frequently asked questions about PRP for athletes
Is PRP banned in sport?
No. PRP is not prohibited under WADA rules. Individual growth factors given separately remain banned, and PRP altered to enhance performance is not allowed. Athletes in tested sports should check with their national anti-doping organisation first.
Which sports injuries does PRP help?
The best evidence is for chronic tendon problems, including tennis elbow, patellar tendinopathy, rotator cuff tendinopathy and plantar fasciitis.
Does PRP help hamstring injuries?
The evidence is mixed. A 2014 placebo-controlled trial of 80 athletes found no faster return to play, while a 2026 meta-analysis of 9 trials found return to sport about 7.5 days sooner, with low-quality evidence.
Does PRP help a ruptured Achilles tendon?
The PATH-2 trial of 230 adults found PRP did not improve function at 24 weeks after Achilles rupture.
How quickly can I return to sport after PRP?
It depends on the injury. Most tendon plans involve a short period of relative rest followed by progressive loading, with return guided by function rather than a fixed date.
How much does PRP for a sports injury cost in London?
At The London PRP Clinic by The Wellness, ultrasound-guided joint and tendon PRP is from Β£595 to Β£995 per treatment, with a diagnostic package from Β£695.
